Project Description:

Creating organic forms using different mediums

When creating 3D artwork, one realizes that a great composition is dynamic from all angles. From what involved front and back now needs a side view. This project includes three types of form.

Planar…

Beginning with my cardboard form, the final outcome is completely different from the original. I had a flowerpot with ripped curls exposed out the top. More curls would then wrap around the tube and create a flowing gesture towards the sides. However, it was still too grounded. To correct this, I went all out and made the entire piece out of textured strips. They went visible from all directions and had no distinct focal point.

Linear…

For the linear form, wire was the required medium. This was especially difficult to warp because of the wire’s tough durability. After a few attempts at making specific shapes, I managed to create a sculpture that was all-around dynamic. To me, jagged bends worked well in its entirety. They were altered in a way that arcs were made vertically and horizontally.

Solid…

Finally came the solid form created with clay. Personally, it was the easiest to complete since the material was also the easiest to shape. Referring back to my planar form, I made swirls as the main detail. However, each time I look at it, I see an alien moving its limbs.

Completed Piece

To combine the three, I simply placed the clay into the makeshift cage at the base of the wire sculpture. Then, the cardboard was draped on top.

The one thing I would improve on next time is the texture. Besides the cardboard, everything seemed too smooth. Rigids or cracks could have been marked on the clay.
